About the Designers

Robert Bullock & Steven Birnbaum
Steven Birnbaum was born and raised in Long Island, NY and was exposed to the arts at a very early age. Every possible opportunity, Steven would attend the theatre, concerts and dance performances. Not knowing exactly where his new passions would lead him, Steven studied both dance and music. Of course, it would be the theatre that would entrance him in his teens and early twenties. With this as his main focus, Steven earned his degree in costume design from the New York State University at New Paltz.
After graduating college, Steven was Assistant Designer for many Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and had the opportunity to work with many Tony Award-winning costume designers, as well as Tony Award-winning actors. Steven made his mark in Theatre as head Costume Designer for several productions and he received acclaim for his many talents in design visions. In the late 1980s, Steven ventured into Evening Wear and sold his gowns to many specialty stores throughout the US. Steven branched out into custom Bridal Wear during this time, forming a new partnership called "Working Weddings." In the early 1990s, Steven left behind the retail world to start "Steven Studios." This new business allowed Steven the opportunity to work in Fashion, Theatre and Dance. He worked with many designers such as Isaac Mizrahi and Fernando Sanchez, as well as some of this century's dance icons like Twyla Tharp, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Mark Morris. Steven's extensive and well-rounded background was the perfect match in joining forces with Robert Bullock.
Robert Bullock grew up on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and always showed a strong interest in fashion. At a very young age Robert taught himself the skills of draping, pattern making and sewing. Robert moved to Atlanta when he turned 17, where he immediately started designing accessories and women's ready-to-wear for local specialty boutiques. After five years, Robert moved to New Orleans to work for a doll manufacturing company as the Head Designer. This opportunity gave him the knowledge of manufacturing on a much larger scale as well as the experience of overseeing production. At age 23, Robert was commissioned to build a factory from the ground up to produce children's clothing. This proved to be highly fulfilling personally, as well as financially.
In 1990, Robert moved to New York and launched "Robert Bullock Hats." Within the first few months, Robert was featured on the cover of Woman's Wear Daily and touted as one of the best new "up and coming" designers. Robert's millinery line sold nationally in select specialty stores as well as all of the Barney's and Neiman Marcus Stores. Robert then branched into men's wear and was able to launch that line in Neiman Marcus, as well. Frustrated by the restrictions forced by ready-to-wear, Robert welcomed the partnership with Steven as a new venture where both talents could flourish to their ultimate potential.
